Herbal Composition Smilax Dominigensis, Tecoma Stans
Benefits
The National University of Costa Rica extensively investigated this combination in order to determine its toxicity level. Their conclusion was that this combination is NON-TOXIC. In another study, they concluded that the tea is not hypoglycemic, that it works by reducing the absorption of glycogen at the intestinal level, that it participates in the destruction of free radicals and the detoxification of the body through the kidneys, and that this combination has been shown to be an excellent kidney cleanser.
Patients have seen an improvement of the symptoms associated with diabetes in as little as 48 hours although for some it may take longer. The plants that compose this tea have been widely dispensed by native herbalists (shaman) dating back to the Mayan civilization who inhabited the area over 2,000 years ago.
Pharmacology
Experimental - The ethnological extract of the bark is active against S. Aureus. The decoction of the bark has a diuretic effect without causing significant elimination of sodium, potassium or uric acid. The fresh extract, the alcohol-based extract and the infusion of the stems improve glucose tolerance and reduce the level of glucose before breakfast. Changes have been observed in insulin levels; it is believed that these changes are related to metabolism of the hepatic glycogen through activating glucogenolisis.
Clinical Properties - The Mexican pharmacopoeia assigns eupeptic properties and suggests its usage for the treatment of gastrointestinal atony and gastritis. Since the end of the nineteenth century, clinical studies done by distinguished doctors have corroborated the use of these plants for diabetes, in conjunction with an adequate diet. The watery extract and the infusion administered orally and subcutaneously have demonstrated anti-diabetic activity in adult patients.
